The Quagmire That Is Post Rock

Harmonic Radar spotlights the independent artists that are capturing the ears of the Harmonic team. This week, we're recommending songs by Wendy Eisenberg, Sydney Sprague, and Gleame. Check them out below!
I came to know of their work via their playing with Bill Orcutt. I love the hypnotic guitar figures, and the general reinvention of the instrument. They have a new eponymous album coming soon, but you can hear some of it already, including the single, “Will You Dare” now. The track contains the typically inventive guitar playing, but is structured in a folk/Americana manner that happily adds some much needed expansion to that hoary genre.

Some songs are meant to be played on repeat because they're fun and hooky. Some songs have intricate layers of musicality and production that reveal themselves on each listen. Some songs tell a story or set a scene that you want to revisit again and again. "Fair Field" (and, frankly, nearly every song on Peak Experience) is the rare example of a song that does all of that at once. This song and some other early singles from Peak Experience got north of 30 plays each over a 5-day cross country roadtrip last summer, and I'm still not sick of them.

Gleame’s “blink boy” is as bubbly and engaging as her striking visuals. Somewhere between glitch-core, hyperpop, and electronic pop, Gleame’s music refreshes and expands on a growing generation of electronic music. With nostalgic callbacks to iPods and computer interfaces, coupled with dazzling music production, Gleame creates an entire world around her music that makes any listener feel transported.
